Thank you to Kathy Cooley, pharmacist at Buchanan Brothers' Pharmacy in Eldred, Pa. She called and identified the man in this photo as her father, William (Bill) Walther. Bill was the owner of Gustafson's Drug Store in Eldred from 1953 until his death in 1967. This photo was probably taken in 1964 or 1965 as the soda fountain counter had not been taken out yet.

This photo was loaned to the Moneysaver years ago by Mrs. George Palmer of Eldred. In the photo are Mr. & Mrs. Gardner D. Vaughn & son Franklin of Eldred, PA. They were proprietors of the grocery store for 38 years, where Isaman's Grocery Store was later located. Mrs. Palmer says she worked there at the time (about 1930) but was ill the day this photo was taken.
Thank you to our many readers who responded to this "Remember When". Marlene Burrows let us know that this store was located on Rte. 346, on the right, going from Eldred to Prentisvale. It is near the Windfall Road intersection and is currently a residence. Gary Southard added that his Aunt Maxine Crandall used to work there. Pat Prescott said that after Gardner Vaughn, it was owned by another Vaughn and Isamans, later was a business called American Awning and Insulation. Leon Hillyard said he believed it was in the 1960's when Eddie Vaughn owned the store.
Gerald Vaughn of Eldred, great-nephew of Gardner Vaughn, supplied us with this information....Gardner Vaughn owned the store from 1930's through mid '50's; he sold to Julius Brown who owned it from 1950's through mid '60's; he sold to William Isaman who owned it through the late '60's; he sold to Edward and Marie Vaughn who owned it through mid '70's; they sold to George and Linda Beckham who owned it at the time that the main part of the store burned. The remaining store was then made into a residence. Later, Don and Rose Blaski opened a business called American Awning on the land and put up a new building, which is a residence today. Gerald added that Gardner Vaughn was blind since he had scarlet fever as a child. He and Gerald's grandfather traveled throughout the country in a horse-drawn wagon selling clove salve when they were younger and were gone for months at a time. Franklin Vaughn, the boy in the picture, resided in Lock Haven until passing away last year.

The Bolivar Diner was located on Main Street in Bolivar, where the current Bolivar Manor is located. It was located as follows: The Chef, Appleby's Red and White Grocery Store, the Bolivar Diner, a roadway (Parker's Alley), and Bryant's Drug Store. In later years, the Bolivar Diner was Ernestine's Beauty Shop and Bryant's Drug Store became Louie Colley's TV store.
Some of those who gave us this information were: Charlotte Payne, John Dunbar, Charlotte Mead, Sack Green, Diane Little, Fran Green, Pat Scott (who was doing dishes at the Bolivar Diner the day that World War II ended), Tony Salazzo, and Connie Lewis.
Some readers guessed the Bolivar Diner was open from approximately 1930-1950's.

Farmers would haul their milk to the factory where is was made into cheese. The cheese was stored in the second floor to cure and age. After the trolley line was built from Olean to Bolivar (1902) the boxes of cheese slid down a chute to the trolley and were transported to Olean. These photos are of Bidwell Motors in Port Allegany, PA. The business was purchased later by Kightlinger Motors of Coudersport, PA and is now vacant. Thank you to Terry Daniels of Port Allegany who identified the man in the photo as the late Mark Crone of Eldred and he believes the photo was taken in the late 1960's.
Update....Letter to the Editor...Bolivar Moneysaver,
I was very interested to see the picture in the March 17th Moneysaver, because it brought back many memories for me. It was the picture of the Bidwell Motors in Port Allegany. It was run by Malcolm (Mal) Bidwell, and he bought it in 1962 or '63. He had made arrangements to buy the building, but before he signed the papers he had a serious heart attack at a young age. The day he signed the papers, his wife Caroline had to drive him over there from Eldred where they lived then, and he signed the papers from a wheel chair. At the time that picture was taken they sold only used cars and serviced cars.
In 1965 they obtained the Chevrolet franchise and then it became Bidwell Chevrolet. Caroline always played a big part in the business, doing all of the book work and becoming a notary so she could do car titles and issue plates.
In 1973, another heart attack took Mal home. Soon the franchise was issued to Caroline, who became the first woman in the area to ever own a dealership. She ran it for many years until she retired. Today she still has a notary business in her home in Port Allegany, and she specializes in doing car titles.
She was pleased to see the picture, and said that Terry Daniels who wrote to the Moneysaver to identify the man in the picture, used to wash cars there when he was in high school. Caroline Bidwell is my sister.
