CATHERINE ANN WAEHNER
Springfield, Ky.- Catherine Ann Waehner of 1936 Valley Hill Road, Springfield, formerly of 812 Irving St., Olean, NY, passed away Monday (Feb. 8, 2010) at the University of Louisville Hospital in Kentucky.
Born Feb. 26, 1945, in Allegany, NY, she was a daughter of Robert G. and Clara A. Fox. On June 1, 1963, in Olean, she married Kenneth C. Waehner, who survives.
Mrs. Waehner attended high school in Allegany. After she married and moved to Olean, she attended the Continental School of Beauty Culture and graduated in 1967. She worked at Crisafulli's Beauty Salon in Allegany until 1969 when she was licensed to do hairdressing and cosmetology from her home. While working from home, she raised her family of three children. "It's hard to put that into words but raising her family was her career and she took her job as mother very seriously."
She was also licensed to sell real estate and worked for Waehner Real Estate; owned and operated a flower shop, The Daisy Shed, in Olean from 1985 to 1986; and worked for Stroehmann Bakeries from 1989 to 1994.
Mrs. Waehner pursued a college education and earned an associate degree in arts, liberal and sciences in 1985 from Jamestown Community College and bachelor's degree in 1994 through Empire State College.
Catherine was a volunteer ombudsman for the Cattaraugus County Department of Aging and enjoyed cooking for family and friends and spending time with her beloved grandchildren, Jake and Andy Waehner. In September 2009, she and her husband moved to Springfield.
Surviving besides her husband, Kenneth C. Waehner, are two sons, Keith D. (Sara) Waehner of Allegany and Scott C. Waehner of Hollywood, Calif.; a daughter, Lora (Shawn) Malloy of Springfield; two grandchildren, Jacob and Andrea May Waehner of Allegany; two brothers, Harry "Bud" Fox of Youngstown, Ohio, and David Fox of Limestone, NY; two sisters, Linda (Paul) Blake of Portville, NY, and Mary (Mark) Accurso of Olean.
She was predeceased by a brother, Harold "Jim" Fox; and a sister, Ellen Fox Paddock.
Friends will be received Thursday from 7 to 9pm at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean, where a memorial service will be held Friday (Feb. 19, 2010) at 11am. The Rev. Dr. Derek J. Cheek, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, will officiate.
