Kenneth J. Bernard
OLEAN, NY - Kenneth J. Bernard, 91, of Billington Ave., passed away at Olean General Hospital Friday (Feb. 19, 2010).
Born Oct. 22, 1919, in Belfast, he was a son of John C. and Ruth I. McCarty Bernard. On Oct. 18, 1941, in Cuba he married Helen A. Cummins, who predeceased him on Feb. 14, 2007.
Mr. Bernard was a graduate of Belfast Central School and a former resident of Belfast and Wellsville and Zephyrhills, FL. He was a farmer and a carpenter and later, the highway superintendent for the town of Belfast. He retired as a road sign maintenance employee with the Allegany County Highway Department. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Belmont.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald J. Bernard of Olean and Loren D. (Sue) Bernard of Ceres; four grandchildren, Mark (Kate) Bernard, Brian Bernard, Troy (Johanna) Bernard and Kimberly Bernard Sutton; two step-grandchildren, Eric and Josh Hurd; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call Sunday at 5 to 7 p.m at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Belmont, and Monday (Feb. 22, 2010) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home following calling hours at 1 p.m., with Deacon Frank Pasquale presiding. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery.
