H. Nelson Austin
“beloved husband, father, & grandfather”
Shinglehouse, PA---H. Nelson Austin, 94, of Shinglehouse, PA, died Wednesday, February 24, 2010 in his home after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Born November 18, 1915 in Bell Run, PA, he was a son of Earl L. and Dacia Howard Austin. On April 17, 1935 in Shinglehouse, he married his wife of 74 years, Ruby M. Confer, who survives.
Mr. Austin attended Bell Run Country School and was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School, class of 1933. He was a self employed dairy farmer for all of his life. During World War II, Mr. Austin was employed by the former Empire Gas Company as a well pumper in local oil fields. He was a Ceres Township supervisor for 30 years. For many years, Mr. Austin oversaw the Bell Run Cemetery.
He attended Bell Run Union Church and was a member of F.A. & I. U. Insurance group (the Myrtle Alliance). He enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling. His greatest love was his family.
Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Daniel N. (Marie) Austin and Lloyd E. (Phyllis) Austin, both of Shinglehouse, and Herbert L. (Elsie) Austin of Corry, PA; twenty grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Morris H. (Onalie) Austin and H. Perry (Ellen) Austin, both of Shinglehouse; a sister, Maxine M. Austin of Shinglehouse; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Austin was predeceased by two sons, N. Robert Austin and Wayne P. Austin; three granddaughters; five sisters, Pauline Austin, Charlotte E. Austin, Ella A. Karr, Iona F. Wood, and Dacia V. Dietze; and four brothers, Orville L. Austin, Howard E. Austin, Erwin L. Austin, and Clair L. Austin.
Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA where funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Chad E. Shaffer, pastor of Bell Run Union Church, and the Rev. Robert G. Achey, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Clearfield, PA, officiating. Burial will be in the Bell Run Cemetery.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to the Bell Run Union Church or to the Bell Run Community Club.
