Mary Jean Culbert


retired English teacher
     CUBA, NY - Mary Jean Culbert, 84, of 44 Maple St. passed away Saturday (Feb. 27, 2010) at the Seneca Healthcare Facility in West Seneca after a lengthy illness.
    Born July 6, 1925, in Cuba, she was a daughter of James and Agnes Conley Culbert. She lived most of her life in Cuba, loving the rural community and the surrounding beauty of its hills and, in particular, Letchworth State Park.
    After graduating from Cuba High School, Mary Jean attended St. Bonaventure University, graduating in 1946.
    She taught at the Delevan, Pioneer and Bolivar Central School districts. After retirement, she spent many years volunteering in the English Department at St. Bonaventure University tutoring students and auditing classes.
    Better known as Gigi to her family, Miss Culbert was the "picture taker" and historian of the family and leaves a legacy of many captured precious memories.
    She participated in Literacy Volunteers, was a past member of the Current Topic Club and was a member of Our Lady of Angels Church and its Altar Society in Cuba.
    Mary Jean always enjoyed the time she spent with children and summers with her nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed traveling.
    Surviving are a sister, Patricia (Patrick) O'Connell of West Seneca; two sisters-in-law, Rose Culbert of East Aurora and Nancy Culbert of Venice FL; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
    In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, James Culbert and John Culbert.
    Friends may call at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull St., Cuba, on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday (March 3, 2010) at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 50 South St., Cuba. Father Jerome M. Dissek will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Cuba.
    Memorials in Mary Jean's name may be made to the Cuba Circulating Library, at 39 E. Main St., Cuba, NY 14727.
