Raymond Allen DeLand


loving son, husband, father and coach

    ENGLEWOOD, FL - Raymond Allen DeLand of Englewood, died Feb. 27, 2010, in Englewood, after a lengthy illness.
    Born Jan. 22, 1930 in Dunkirk, he was predeceased by his wife, Monica Burdick DeLand, in 2002.
    Mr. DeLand received a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia; and a master's degree in Education from St. Bonaventure University. He spent most of his teaching and coaching career at Portville Central School, Portville, NY. Not only was he a science teacher and athletic director, but also a coach for track, baseball, and girls and boys basketball until his retirement in 1990.
    Following, he coached the girl's basketball team for two additional years, where he led the team to the State Final Four. Additionally, Mr. DeLand was selected Coach of the Year numerous times by the Big Thirty Basketball Committee.
    Mr. DeLand will best be remembered by the students and staff of Portville Central School for his love and dedication to athletics and to the athletes who he inspired.
    Surviving are his mother, Lena DeLand of Dunkirk; daughter, Moya (Jonathan) Paige of Fernandina, FL; granddaughter, Katherine Monica Paige of Fernandina; and several nieces and nephews.
    At Mr. DeLand's request, there will be no visitation or service. Arrangements are under the direction of Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood, FL.
    A memorial will be established in his memory. Donations may be sent to Portville Central School. Checks may be made out to Portville Sports Boosters.
