Philip E. Childs
CANISTEO, NY - Philip E. Childs, 66, of 3899 County Route 31, and a former Bolivar and Huber Heights, Ohio, resident, died Saturday (March 6, 2010) in Elmira as a result of injuries sustained in a car-pedestrian accident.
Born Jan. 7, 1944, in Olean, he was a son of Carl and Helen Paffie Childs.
Mr. Childs attended Portville Central School until third grade and then Bolivar Central School, where he graduated in 1963. He joined the U.S. Army National Guard following high school graduation and trained at Fort Knox, Ky. He then transferred to the Ohio Air National Guard, retiring after 17 years of service.
Following his retirement from the National Guard, he was employed as a driver for Eby-Brown Co. in Springfield, Ohio, for 22 years. He retired Jan. 8, 2010, and afterward he moved back to New York.
Mr. Childs loved to have fun, tell jokes and play jokes on people. He also enjoyed sledding and getting reacquainted with his brothers and sisters. He loved his family more than anything. He was looking forward to spending time at the Bolivar Country Club golfing with his sons and brothers.
Surviving are sons, Craig (Suzanne) Childs of Wonder Lake, Ill., and Christopher (Marcia) Childs of Dayton, Ohio; daughters, Colleen (Richard) Bevins of Arcanum, Ohio, Carmen (Robert) Miller of Troy, Ohio; Caryn (Jason) Rix of Cuba, McKenzie Thorpe of Huber Heights, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; brothers, Gary Childs of Cumberland, Md., Jim (Rhea) Childs of Richburg, Steve (Sis) Childs of Bolivar, Rick (Tonia) Childs of Bolivar, Brian (Kelly) Childs of Franklinville; sisters, Pamela (Brent) Howard of Clarksville and Deena (Chris) Holcomb of Portville. Also surviving is the love of his life, Sunnie Jean Day Griswold of Canisteo, who he loved beyond words and who he was looking forward to spending the rest of his life with.
Friends may call at Schafffner Funeral Home Inc., Bolivar, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held Friday (March 12, 2010) at 11a.m. at Faith Bible Church, Little Genesee. Burial will be in Bowler Memorial Cemetery, Little Genesee.
