D. Wesley McCrea
WELLSVILLE - D. Wesley McCrea, 76, of 201 Stevens St. died Friday (Jan. 23, 2009) in Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville, after a long illness.
He was born July 25, 1932, in Richburg, a son of Lloyd and Winifred Saunders McCrea. On Nov. 25, 1973, in Hornell, he was married to Suzanne Reitnauer, who survives.
He had resided in Wellsville for the past 35 years.
He was a graduate of the Richburg High School, Westbrook Academy in Olean, and also Alfred University.
He retired in December 1992 from the Chemistry Department at Alfred State College.
He had served with the U.S. Air Force in the Korean Conflict.
He was a longtime member of the former Richburg Seventh Day Baptist Church, where he had served as elder, deacon and trustee. He had served with the Allegany County Chapter of the American Heart Association for several years as fund chairman.
He had volunteered with his wife at the Food Pantry at the local Salvation Army Citadel and was a member of the Richburg Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
He was active in the Senior Saints of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, going into various areas to help rebuild homes for the needy.
Since the closing of the Richburg Church, he had held membership in the Alfred Station Seventh Day Baptist Church.
Surviving besides his wife Suzanne are his sister-in-law, Grace McCrea of Richburg; his brother-in-law, Karl (Ann) Reitnauer of Hornell; nieces and nephews, Cindy (Ron) Smith of Richburg, Ellen (Jim) Pitts of Richburg, Bonnie (John) Batty of California, Jim Reitnauer of Liverpool, N.Y., Nancy (David) Lewis of Arkport, Otto (Lori) Reitnauer of Macon, Ga., Katie (P.J.) Herrnecker of Hornell, Max (Robynne) Reitnauer of Maryland, John (Carol) Reitnauer of New Hampshire, and Mark Reitnauer of Norfolk, Va.; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Maurice McCrea and Robert Storh, and an aunt, Onalee Saunders.
Friends may call at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville on Monday from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m., where services will be held on Tuesday (Jan. 27, 2009 at 11 a.m. Pastor Kenneth Chroniger of the Alfred Station Seventh Day Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville.
Memorials may be made to the Alfred Station Seventh Day Baptist Church, the Allegany County SPCA or the charity of the donor's choice.
