Gordon E. Johnston
PORT ALLEGANY-Gordon E. Johnston, 90, of N. Brooklynside Rd., died Saturday (Apr. 17, 2010) in Sena Kean Manor, Smethport, after a brief illness.
Born March 5, 1920, in Wrights Corners, PA, he was a son of Harry and Roxy Smith Johnston. On Mar. 16, 1957, in Port Allegany, he married P. Jane Black, who survives.
Mr. Johnston worked for Worth Smith and later owned and managed Johnston Tools, Inc. of Port Allegany, over 30 years, before his retirement.
He was a life long resident of the area and a graduate of Smethport High School, Class of 1938.
He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the US Army, 859th Medical Service Detachment.
He was a member of McKean Lodge 388, F. & A.M., Smethport, Coudersport Consistory, Zem Zem Shrine Temple, Erie, PA, and McKean County Shrine Club; member and past president of the Fairmount Cemetery Association, Farmers Valley; National Rifle Association, and avid outdoorsman.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Jane, are a son, Eric P. (Lisa) Johnston; a daughter, Jan C. Birchall of Indian Trails, NC; two grandchildren, Carli Johnston of Port Allegany, Joanne Nimec of Elmira, NY; a brother, Dr. Paul (Beverly) Johnston of Punxsutawney, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Debbie Nimec, and a brother, John Francis Johnston.
Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Apr. 21, 2010) in the funeral home, with Rev. Garen Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Port Allegany, officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Farmers Valley, PA.
A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
A military service will be conducted Wednesday immediately following the funeral service, by the Port Allegany Honor Guard.
Memorials can be made to the S.W. Smith Library or the First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany.
