Daniel P. Rice
LADSON, S.C. - Daniel Patrick Rice, 52, of Ladson passed away Wednesday (Jan. 28, 2009) at Trident Regional Hospital in Charleston after a long battle with cancer.
Born April 21, 1956, in Elmira, N.Y., he was a son of John M. and Maxine Calhoun Rice.
Mr. Rice graduated in 1974 from Oswayo Valley High School in Shinglehouse, PA, where he was recognized as an outstanding basketball and baseball player.
He then served for 20 years with the US Navy and retired as a petty officer 1st class, cryptologist technician. One of his most distinguished highlights of his Navy career was the opportunity to showcase his unique abilities in cryptology for the U.S. Navy Seal teams.
After retirement from the Navy, he worked as a successful and respected engineer technician for Scientific Research Corp.
Mr. Rice was very passionate about athletics and mentoring others. He served as a head coach for the Goose Creek Diamondbacks and Crowfield Vipers baseball teams for many years.
Surviving besides his mother, Maxine Rice of DeBary, FL, and his grandmother, Marjorie Calhoun of Mahopac, NY, are his wife, Cindy Coker Rice of Ladson; three children, Chelsie (Andy) Cornelius of Fayetteville, Heather (Darren) Turner of Goose Creek and Sgt. Scott Rice of Bamberg, Germany; two stepchildren, Casey Zsarnay and Corey Wilhoit, both of Ladson; four grandchildren, Emily and Holly Cornelius, Taylor and Dylan Turner; a stepgranddaughter, Cadence Zsarnay; two brothers, Stephen (Larry) Rice of DeBary and Christopher Rice of Shinglehouse; a niece, Kristen (Ron) Thompson, and a nephew, Sean Rice, both of Shinglehouse.
He was predeceased by his father, John M. Rice.
Funeral services were held Saturday (Jan. 31, 2009) at 2 p.m. in the McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Goose Creek Chapel.
