Gertrude E. (Trudy) Griffith

ALLEGANY- Gertrude E. “Trudy” Griffith, of 3974 Route 417, formerly of Port Allegany, passed away Thursday (Feb. 5, 2009) at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Newark, NJ, a daughter of George M. and Beulah Hunter Rapp. On June 12, 1948, in New Haven, CT, she married Larry O. Griffith, Jr., who survives.
She graduated from the Hamden High School, Hamden, CT, Class of 1944. She attended LaSalle Junior College, majoring in Dietetics. After graduation, she worked at the Institute of Living and participated in various sports and activities.
She was an accomplished ice dancer. She was a former member of the Pittsburgh, New Haven, and Boston Skating Clubs. She was a member of the Figure Skating Club of America.
She had served on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross, Port Allegany and Sedalia, MO; and was a certified water safety and first aid instructor.
She was a member of the Cairn Terrier Club of America, where she was a past secretary and treasurer for several years. She and her husband raised and showed Cairn Terriers until retiring in 1986.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Larry, are a son, Larry O. (Denise) Griffith, III of Enfield, NH; and a daughter, Darlene H. (Ralph) Howard of Franklinville, NY; 3 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, a brother, Marvin (Ann) Rapp of Cheshire, CT; and four nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
At the family, request there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later time and date to be announced.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany.
