Virginia L. (Toots) Weitzel
OLEAN, NY - Virginia L. "Toots" Weitzel of 350 Front St., Apsen Tower, formerly of Goodrich Avenue, passed away Sunday (June 20, 2010) in Cuba Memorial Hospital's Palliative Care Unit.
Born Sept. 10, 1915, in Olean, she was a daughter of N. Oscar and Etta Lucas Bowersox. Her father nicknamed her "Toots," before her mother decided on the name Virginia. On June 26, 1936, in the Olean First Methodist Church parsonage, she married William E. Weitzel, who died May 11, 1971.
She attended elementary schools in Olean and Allegany. In late 1929, her parents, two brothers and Toots moved to Torrance, CA, where she graduated from Torrance High School in 1934 and the family returned to Olean in July 1934. She worked at Freitag's, Olean Tile Co., Olean Reactance Plant, Sibley and Graham Insurance Co. and retired from the kitchen/employee cafeteria department of Olean General Hospital in August 1975.
Mrs. Weitzel loved all types of good music, reading, sewing, playing the ukulele, humor, chatting and writing to friends and relatives, as well as writing an occasional item to the Olean Times Herald. She appreciated the obituaries, exception being this one, and "that's may final joke."
She was a life member of Torrance High School Alumni Association, a charter member of the Olean Historical Society, Johnny Appleseed Festivals, former member of the Aspen Tower Tenants Association, a member of the Olean Senior League, Olean General Hospital Retirees and Christ United Methodist Church of Olean.
Surviving are two sons, Bill L. (Judith) Weitzel of Salamanca and Mark E. (Roberta) Weitzel of Portville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother Gerald R. (Kathleen Bledsoe) Bowersox of Olean, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by an older brother, Everett Bowersox; and an infant sister, Ruth Bowersox.
Friends will be received at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean, on Friday (June 25, 2010) from 11 a.m. to noon, at which time a memorial service will be held. The Rev. Dr. William A. Allen and the Rev. Kristen Roth Allen, co-pastors of Christ United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Olean.
