Glenn C. Cummins


Loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather

    FRIENDSHIP - Glenn C. Cummins, 91, of 18 Factory St. passed away Sunday (Aug. 1, 2010) at his son's home, surrounded by family, after a brief illness.
  Born July 24, 1919, in Cuba, he was one of 14 children of the late Henry and Elizabeth Bernard Cummins. He was married to the former Helen S. Johnson, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by a close friend, Virginia Carpenter, with whom he enjoyed companionship for many years after the loss of his wife.
  Mr. Cummins served with the U.S.  Army from April 1, 1942, to Nov. 5, 1945. While enlisted, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Medal. He was proud to have served in the military, which remained an important part of his life.
  After returning to the area, Mr. Cummins was employed by Acme Electric Corp. as a welder for 38 years, retiring in 1982. After retiring, he went to work for C&G Oil Co. and helped on the oil leases for a few years. Glenn's work ethic continued for many years while he was sexton of Mt. Hope Cemetery in Friendship.
  He enjoyed his time with family, gardening, traveling, cards, Skip-Bo and three-finger shot drinks, as well as hunting and fishing. His many stories will be remembered by anyone who knew him.
  Glenn  was a lifetime member of Friendship American Legion Post 1168.
  Surviving are a son, Robert "Bob" (Jaclyn) Cummins of Friendship; a daughter, Robin L. (Donald) Cole of Friendship; grandchildren, Jessica (Ryan) McKnight, Rob (Brandy) Cummins, Carina Hovey, Kristen Wood, Shawn (Ann Marie) McCarthy and Kelley (Joe) Anderson; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Paul (Mary Lou) Cummins of Cuba, Raymond (Dorla) Cummins of Alabama and Andrew "Mike" Cummins of Nile; a sister, Edith Harp of Friendship; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Linda Snyder and family.
  In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia J. McCarthy, on Feb. 26, 2009; seven brothers, Herman, Arthur, Lawrence, Lavern, Pete, James and Alfred Cummins; and two sisters, Anna Ward and Helen Bernard.
  The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull St., Cuba, where funeral services will be held Thursday (Aug. 5, 2010) at 11 a.m. The Rev. Vernon Dean, retired pastor of Faith Baptist Church, will officiate, Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Friendship.
  Full military honors will be accorded by members of Friendship American Legion Post 1168.
  Memorials, if desired, may be made to Friendship American Legion Post 1168.
