Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Young
friend to all who knew her
FRIENDSHIP, NY - Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Young, 85, of 7697 County Road 20 died Friday (Aug. 6, 2010) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville following a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 26, 1924, in Galeton, PA, she was a daughter of John A. and Julia Edna Douglas Carney. On Oct. 28, 1942, in Cuba, she married Walter D. Kruger, who died in action on Sept. 13, 1944, during World War II. On May 23, 1946, in Cuba, she married Charles B. Young, who died April 30, 1989.
Betty had resided in the Friendship area most of her life and attended Cuba and Friendship school districts. She spent her childhood in Cuba and later moved to Friendship, then to Angelica. In 1956, she returned to Friendship and for several years was a machine operator at Long Manufacturing Co. in Angelica. Later she was a stacker at Acme Electric Corp. in Cuba, then was a plater at AVX in Olean for a short time.
Her most enjoyable occupations were being activities director at Houghton Nursing Facility, business manager for Burt's Sunoco and Repair family-owned business in Belvidere and Belmont, and the ceramic studio she operated in her home.
Betty enjoyed hunting, flowers and plants, crafts of all kinds, motorcycling and snowmobiling, of which she was a certified safety instructor. She loved and enjoyed her family.
She was a member of the United Church of Friendship, member and past secretary-treasurer of the Friendship Rod and Gun Club, an honorary life member of the National Rifle Association and a former member of the Angelica Home Bureau.
Surviving are a son, Charles Burt (Christine) Young of Friendship; a daughter, Charlene R. (LeRoy) Goodliff of Wellsville; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harry (Ruth) Carney, Arthur (Marge) Carney and Richard (Carolyn) Carney, all of Friendship; a sister, Loretta Sisson of Portville; a brother-in-law, Maurice "Mush" Young of Friendship; a sister-in-law, Doris Carney of Arivaca, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a four-year-old son, W. Dean Kruger; two brothers, Alfred Carney and John Carney; and seven sisters, Mary Long Layman, Lovina Merrifield, Leona Carlin, Frances Merrifield, Violet Giles, Julia Jordan and Sarah Calhoun.
Friends may call today and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Friendship. Funeral services will be held Monday (Aug. 9, 2010) at 1 p.m. in the United Church of Friendship, with the Rev. David Ford, pastor of the Angelica First Baptist Church, and the Rev. Kirk Kirch, pastor of the United Church of Friendship, co-officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Friendship.
Memorials may be made to the Friendship Rod and Gun Club.
