Mary J. Spoon
“beloved mother and grandmother”
Coudersport, PA----Mary J. Spoon, 100, of Coudersport, formerly of Indiana, died Monday, August 16, 2010 in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport.
Born February 8, 1910 in Katy, Texas, she was a daughter of Jacob F. and Jessie Blake Maxwell.
Mrs. Spoon was a graduate of Crawfordsville High School and was a graduate of Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education. She taught school in Indiana retiring from North Central High School in Indianapolis. She held teaching licenses in English, mathematics, history, Latin, and library sciences.
She was a member of the Carmel Disciples of Christ Church in Carmel, Indiana and was active in the Hebron Union Church. She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association, a member and past president of B.P.W. in Indiana, a member and past president of the American Association of University Women.
Mrs. Spoon enjoyed needlework, especially tatting. She won Best in Show at the Potter County Fair in 2006 for her tatting.
She had lived in Indiana most of her life until moving to Coudersport in 2004.
Surviving are a son, Thomas M. (Carole) Spoon of Coudersport; two grandchildren, Robert E. (Rene`) Spoon and Robin J. (Steve) Spoon-Cradduck; and three step-grandchildren, Judy E. Sensel, Frederick A. (Judy) Coll, and Daniel M. (Chong) Coll.
Friends may call at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, on Thursday, August 19, 2010 from 10 a.m. to noon at which time funeral services will be held with the Rev. Howard R. Burnham, pastor of the Hebron Union Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Sweden Hill Cemetery, Coudersport.
