Ronald Sprague
Portville businessman
PORTVILLE- Ronald Sprague of Maple Avenue, Portville, and Indian Lake Estates, Fla., passed away Monday (Aug. 16, 2010) at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.
Born Sept. 17, 1926, in Jamestown, he was a son of the late Arthur and Ceca Main Sprague. On Sept. 3, 1949, in Buffalo, he married the former Doris Bruderlin, who passed away Oct. 17, 1978. In 1981 in Portville, he married the former Joanne Joyce, who survives.
Ron was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1944. Following graduation, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the University of Buffalo, class of 1949.
He was owner and manager of the former Sprague Oil Co. and former owner of the Portville Liquor Store. Currently, he owned and operated Sprague Turkey Farm Inc., Rondor Construction Co. and Portville Ice.
Ron was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Portville, member and past master of Portville Masonic Lodge 579, and avid golfer and member of the Bartlett, Bolivar and Wellsville country clubs. He was also a member of the Portville Country Club at Coon Hollow and a life member of VFW Post 1619 of Olean and Portville Volunteer Fire Department. He had served as village and town of Portville justice of the peace for 27 years.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Randy (Antoinette) Sprague of Portville; a daughter, Lori (Keith) Miller of Portville; two stepdaughters, Debra (Jerry) Cygan of Olean and Karen Crawford of Portville; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several cousins.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 51 S. Main St., Portville, where funeral services will be held Friday (Aug. 20, 2010) at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Marilyn Hale, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Portville, will officiate. Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.
