Daniel Meredith Backus

SMETHPORT, PA - Daniel Meredith Backus, 70, died Wednesday (Aug. 11, 2010) in Huntington Beach (Calif.) Hospital.
Daniel was born in Kane on Feb. 19, 1940, the son of Mary S. Backus and the late William F. Backus.
He was educated in Smethport elementary schools, attended schools in Kingston, Canada, and Leetsdale, Pa., and graduated from Smethport High School in 1958.
He also attended St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y., and received an associate degree from Orange Coast College in 1970, along with a BA in chemisty and a BS in biological sciences from the University of California at Irvine in 1973.
At the time of his death, Daniel was head of his own computer programming company, CDMB Systems, in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Daniel was known for his love of reading, photography and cars, his dry wit and his strong interest in politics.
Surviving are his mother, Mary S. Backus of Smethport; a brother, Jeffrey K. Backus of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Lauren Backus Haag of Boalsburg and Kathleen Backus (Neil) Cocolin of State College; his longtime companion, Ann Megivern King of Costa Mesa; many nieces and nephews; his close friend and business partner, Barry L. O'Connor of California; and many friends in California and Smethport.
He was predeceased by his father, William F. Backus; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
A memorial services will be held Sept. 25, 2010, at 11 a.m. in St. Elizabeth Church, Smethport. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery.
A luncheon will follow in the church basement.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Daniel's name be made to the March of Dimes or Easter Seals for research and support services to Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS), to the ASPCA or to PAWS.
