Eugene T. (Gene) Williams
loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all
WESTONS MILLS, NY - Eugene T. "Gene" Williams, of 1089 Promised Land Road, Westons Mills, passed away Tuesday (Aug. 24, 2010) at Cuba Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born Oct. 31, 1919, in Olean, he was a son of the late Claude and Anne Donovan Williams. On Oct. 25, 1941, in Portville, he married Marie Gleason, who survives.
Mr. Williams was a lifetime resident of Westons Mills and graduated from Olean High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945.
He was employed at McGraw Edison Corp. for 29 years, retiring in 1980 and was a member of the company's retirement association.
Mr. Williams was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Portville. He was a life member of the Westons Mills Volunteer Fire Department and served as its fire chief, fire commissioner and president.
He was a past member of the Portville Police Department. He was Portville town supervisor for 21 years, Portville dog warden, was on the Portville Historical Society's board of directors and was a member of the Portville Central School District board of education. Mr. Williams was inducted into the Portville Central School Hall of Fame and was an avid Portville Central School football fan.
He enjoyed hunting rabbits and fishing with friends. He had the "gift of blarney."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Diane (John) Dray, of Eldred PA, Nancy Williams, of Portville, and Elaine (John) Campion, of Jamestown; eight grand-children; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by an infant sister, Lenore, and a daughter, Kathleen O'Dell.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today (Aug.. 26, 2010) and Friday (Aug. 27, 2010) at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 51 S. Main St., Portville. A scripture service will be held in the funeral home on Friday. Funeral services will be held Saturday (Aug. 28, 2010) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Oratory, 43 Maple Avenue, Portville. Father Gregory Dobson pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
