George Manley Dennis
loving husband, father and grandfather
WEST CLARKSVILLE - George Manley Dennis, 83, of 9051 Hoyett Road passed away Monday (Feb. 16, 2009) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bath following a lengthy illness.
Born Feb. 5, 1925, in Olean, he was a son of George Emerson and Dorothy Amanda Manley Dennis. On June 9, 2007, at the family home, he married the former Karen Swift, who survives.
Mr. Dennis served with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. While serving as a water tender 3rd class on the USS Lampson, the vessel was bombarded by a Japanese suicidal plane, an attack in which he was injured. While recovering, he missed the ceremonies in Washingon, D.C., that would have awarded him a Purple Heart for his service.
During his enlistment, he also saw action in the battles of Ormoc Bay, Japan and Guam.
In his earlier years, Mr. Dennis had been a police officer for the town of Cuba. He had worked at Edstrom Construction Co. in Olean as a carpenter prior to his retirement.
Mr. Dennis was a member of Cuba VFW Post 2721, SSgt. Shawn M. Clemons Memorial AMVETS Post 1 of Cuba and Cuba American Legion Post 655, where he was past commander twice as well as a former chairman of the board. In addition, he and his son were involved in the remodeling efforts for the post's upstairs construction several years ago. He was also a member of Cuba-Friendship Lodge 306
F&AM.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Jeffrey (Sharon Wojick) Dennis of Nehalem, Ore., a daughter Jolene "Jodi" (Daniel) Martin of West Clarksville; eight grandchildren; eight great-grand children; three brothers, Daryl Dennis of Cuba, Ronald (Janice) Dennis and James Dennis, both of West Clarksville; three sisters, Ellondene (Perry) Lamberton of Red Springs, N.C., Betty Dunshie of Shinglehouse, Pa., and Sharon (Butch) Robinson of West Clarksville; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Dan Merrit.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert Dennis.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service Inc., 9 Bull St., Cuba, where funeral services will be held Friday (Feb. 20, 2009) at 11 a.m. The Rev. Leslie E. Chambers, pastor of the West Clarksville Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in West Clarksville Cemetery, town of Clarksville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cuba American Legion for the benefit of Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bath, 5 E. Main St., Cuba, NY 14727.
