Eugenia H. Palmatier
“beloved wife & mother”
Coudersport, PA---Eugenia H. Palmatier, 88, of North Main Street, Coudersport, PA, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, PA, after a long illness.
Born March 6, 1920 in Obi, NY, she was a daughter of Cleo and Gladys Owens Foster. On January 23, 1943 in Bolivar, NY, she married Earle S. Monroe, who died in March of 1943 in World War II. On September 1, 1975 in Portville, NY, she married Harry C. Palmatier, Jr., who survives.
She raised her son, Earle, and her brother, David, at the time of her first husband’s death.
Mrs. Palmatier was a graduate of Portville (NY) High School, class of 1936 and attended the former Bryant and Stratton Business School in Olean, NY.
During World War II, Mrs. Palmatier was employed at the Eldred Munitions Plant. She was employed at the Portville School District, Portville, NY for 26 years, first as a secretary and then later as the business manager. She was then employed at the Potter County Courthouse in the Register and Recorder’s Office from where she retired.
Mrs. Palmatier was a member Obi (NY) Evangelical United Brethren Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and she was also a founding member of the Faith Bible Church in Little Genesee, NY where she also served as church treasurer. She was a longtime volunteer and treasurer at the Christmas House in Coudersport, PA. She also volunteered at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed traveling having traveled to several European countries. Mrs. Palmatier also enjoyed camping. She was devoted to her loving family and many friends.
Surviving besides her husband are a son, Earle S. (Marcia) Monroe of Montgomery, Alabama; four stepchildren, Harry C. (Sachiko Kogure) Palmatier III of Atlanta, Georgia, Robert J. (Sharon) Palmatier of Orange Park, Florida, Timothy J. (Nancy) Palmatier of Coudersport, PA, and Jeannie L. (Terry) Plummer of Fayetteville, NC; twelve grandchildren: Michele Burdell, Melissa Landerbaugh, Bryan Palmatier, Chad Palmatier, Kimberly Hipp, Robbie Palmatier, Caleb Palmatier, Luke Palmatier, Molly O’Reilly, Janel Palmatier, and Vincent Castano; seven great-grandchildren: Morgan Burdell, Jacob Burdell, Ethan O’Reilly, Aidan O’Reilly, Pierson Hipp, Tyler Hipp, and Ryan Hipp; a brother, Norman E. (Nancy) Foster of the Town of Amherst, NY; and several nieces and nephews, including Steve (Nancy) Ensell and John (Debbie) Ensell, both of Portville, NY.
In addition to her parents and first husband, Mrs. Palmatier was preceded in death by three brothers, Cleo Foster, Jr., Stanley Foster, and David Foster; and two sisters, Arlene Ensell and Marian Meyers.
At Mrs. Palmatier’s request, there will be no public visitation. Private funeral services will be held at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, PA on Saturday February 21, 2009. Pastor Sam Crossley of the Coudersport Alliance Church and Norman E. Foster, Mrs. Palmatier’s brother and deacon at Christ the King Church in Amherst, NY, will officiate. Burial will be in the Eulalia Cemetery, Coudersport, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christmas House, 1 Water Street, Coudersport, PA 16915.
