Robert M. (Whip) Appleby
OLEAN- Robert M. "Whip" Appleby, 82, formerly of South Avenue, Olean, NY and a longtime resident of Bolivar, passed away Saturday (Feb. 14, 2009) at The Pines Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Olean following a lengthy illness.
Born July 15, 1926, in Olean, NY he was a son of Chauncey M. and June Hockenberry Appleby. On Oct. 22, 1949, he married the former Patricia Weis, who predeceased him Dec. 31, 1983.
Bob was a graduate of Bolivar Central School and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Navy.
He was employed by the U.S. Post Office in Bolivar, NY as a letter carrier for 38 years, retiring in 1981.
Mr. Appleby was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean, a longtime member of St. Mary's Church in Bolivar, NY a member of Kenyon Andrus American Legion Post 772 of Bolivar and the National Letter Carriers Association, and he was a founding member of the Bolivar Town Band.
Surviving are a son, Michael (Michelle) Appleby of Olean; a daughter, Nancy (Paul) Paytash of Rome, NY; three grandchildren, Kim and Mike Paytash and Andrew Appleby; a sister, Eileen (Claude) Potter of Niagara Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Patrick Appleby; a sister, Virginia Stimson; and two brothers, Richard Appleby and Donald Clark.
There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday (Feb. 19, 2009) at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Bolivar, with Father Gregory J. Dobson, pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bolivar.
Memorials to HomeCare and Hospice, 1225 W. State St., Olean, NY 14760 would be appreciated by the family.
