Wilma J. Roberts
"matriarch"
STEAMBURG, NY - Wilma J. Roberts, 91, formerly of West Perimeter Road, Steamburg, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 16, 2010) at the Bradford (PA) Manor.
Born July 7, 1919, in Quaker Bridge, she was a daughter of the late Chauncey and Miriam Crouse Lee.
Mrs. Roberts attended School 5 on the Allegany Territory of the Seneca Nation Reservation and later Salamanca High School. At the time of her retirement, she was employed by Highbanks Camp Ground in the town of Coldspring. In earlier years she was employed by National Worsted Mills in Falconer, Bell Aircraft in Niagara Falls and was the building manager for the Seneca Nation Community Building. A member of the Beaver Clan, Mrs. Roberts at one time received the Seneca Nation Woman of the Year Award.
She was a life member of the New York State Fair, Coldspring Longhouse and Coldspring Presbyterian Church, Coldspring Fire Department Auxiliary and Randolph American Legion Post 181 Auxiliary, a social member of Randolph VFW Post 6533, a member of Six Nations Indian Agricultural Society and National Indian Council of the Aging, and she was a past member of the Iroquois Senior Citizens.
Surviving are a daughter, Ellyson Van Curen of Portville; three grandchildren, Preston (Wendy) VanCuren, Valerie (Jeremy) Bigglestone, Heather (Jason) Bialek; eight great-grandchildren, Gunnar and Madeline VanCuren, William and Samuel Bigglestone, Heather Bialek, Ariela, Jett and Alicia Edwards, two great-great-grandchildren, Lucius and Lincoln; and a sister, Doris Kenyon of Jimersontown.
She was predeceased by her longtime companion Enrico Catoni.
There will be no visitation. A private gathering of the family will be held at the convenience of the family.
