Dorotha M. Carpenter


“beloved mother and grandmother”

Shinglehouse, PA---Dorotha M. Carpenter, 94, of Shinglehouse, PA, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, in Lakeview Senior Care and Living Center, Smethport, PA, after a long illness.
     Born May 21, 1914 in Millport, PA, she was a daughter of Earl and Carolyn Lunn Oles.  In 1934 in Shinglehouse, PA, she married Earl D. Carpenter, who died on November 1, 1982.
     Mrs. Carpenter was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School, class of 1931.  She, along with her husband, owned and operated a dairy farm on Bell Run Road in Shinglehouse.  She was later an Avon representative.  
     She was an active member of the Bell Run Community Club. Mrs. Carpenter was very active in the Republican Party for many years and also served on the election board for Ceres Township.  She was a member and volunteer of the Oswayo Valley Senior Center in Shinglehouse for several years.  She enjoyed bowling, having been a member of bowling leagues in Shinglehouse, Bolivar, and Olean.  She also traveled to many bowling tournaments.  She loved flowers and gardening.  She enjoyed traveling. She also enjoyed helping her friends and driving them to their doctors’ appointments.
     Surviving are seven children: DeBernie L. (Marie) Carpenter of Hillsboro, NH, Nancy L. (Harold) Nolan of Shinglehouse, PA, Donald L. (Sandee) Carpenter of Olean, NY, Hugh B. (Chere) Carpenter of Shinglehouse, PA, Bradley L. (Nancy) Carpenter of Allegany, NY, John D. Carpenter of Shinglehouse, PA, and Patti D. Harder of Bradford, PA; seventeen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.
     In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom Oles and Leon Oles; and a grandson, Steven Carpenter.
     Friends may call on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA and on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at which time funeral services will be held.  The Rev. Russell J. Horning, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Shinglehouse, PA, will officiate.  Burial will be in the Bell Run Cemetery, Shinglehouse, PA.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oswayo Valley Senior Center, 1005 East Honeoye Street, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.
