Marjorie G. Crainer
OLEAN, NY - Marjorie G. Crainer, 90, formerly of Olean, died Saturday (June 11, 2011) at Cuba Memorial Hospital following a gradual decline in health.
She was born in Wellsville in 1921 and moved to Duke Center, PA, with her family when still a young child.
Marjorie graduated from Otto High School in Duke Center and continued her education at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. Her college education was interrupted during World War II when she went to work as an office worker at Ka-Bar Cutlery in Olean and met her future husband. She later completed her BA degree at St. Banaventure, graduating cum lade in 1966.
Marjorie taught English at Allegany Central School for nearly 30 years before retiring early to spend more time with her husband. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, helping to develop it childcare and preschool programs. In 2005, she moved to Fort Collins, CO, in order to be nearer to her daughter. In 2010, as her health began to fail, she chose to return to New York State. She spent several very happy months at Underwood Manor in Hinsdale, and her family is especially grateful for the loving care she received there.
Surviving are her daughter, Mary Lynn (Fiks) Nel of Fort Collins; two granddaughters, Sasha (Jay) Strohm and Heidi Nel, both of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Maynard (Mary) Brown of Cuba; a brother-in-law, Ralph Manning of Allegany; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Herman "Slim" Crainer in 1994; and a sister, Pauline Manning in 2007.
A memorial service will be held July 1, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, North Fourth and Laurens Streets, Olean.
In lieu of flowers, memorials, if desired, may be made to Underwood Manor, c/o Nancy Crawford, 4460 Union Hill Road, Hinsdale, NY 14743, which will be used in a way that will add to the daily enjoyment of Marjorie's many friends there as well as future residents.
