Margaret L. Torrey
PORTVILLE - Margaret L. Torrey, 100, of 70 Brooklyn St. passed away Wednesday (April 8, 2009) at Olean General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 1, 1909, in Youngsville, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Maurice C. and Calla Beason Babcock Sr. In 1930, she married Edwin "Ed" Hall, who died in 1972. In 1985, she married Jasper "Jap" Torrey, who died in 1991.
Margaret graduated from Houghton High School and attended Houghton College. She lived for several years in Niagara Falls where she worked for Union Carbide until the end of World War II. For many years, she and her husband, Ed, operated a dairy farm in West Clarksville. Besides helping with the farm, Margaret also worked at Acme Electric Corp. in Cuba and Fibercel Corp. in Portville.
She was a longtime member of Obi area churches and served as an organist for more than 50 years.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Gayle (Larry) Wheeler of Olean; two stepsons, Thomas (Bonita) Torrey of Portville and Daniel (Mindy) Torrey of Hershey, Pa.; nephews, Clyde (Linda) Rathbun of Greece and Gordon MacEwan of Florida; and nieces, Joyce (Dick) Hodges of Union Springs, Ruth (LaVerne) Cronk of Fillmore and Janette (Larry) Cartwright of Corfu.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by two brothers, Elmer Babcock and Maurice Babcock Jr.; three sisters, Helen Rathbun, Alpha Ruth Shira and Catherine Elizabeth MacEwan; and two stepsons, Richard Torrey and Michael Torrey.
There will be no visitation.
Private burial will take place in West Genesee Cemetery, Obi.
A memorial service will be held at the West Clarksville Baptist Church, 9003 Daggett Hollow Road, Obi, on April 25, 2009, at a time to be announced. Pastor Leslie Chambers will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the West Clarksville Baptist Church or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Olean.
Arrangements are under direction of the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., Portville.
