Leslie C. (Jim) Newton
FRIENDSHIP -Leslie C. "Jim" Newton, 77, of 22 Stevens Ave. died unexpectedly Thursday (April 9, 2009) at Millard Fillmore Hospital, Buffalo.
Born May 15, 1931, in Sharon Center, Pa., he was a son of Wallace and Cora Corwin Newton. On May 21, 1977, in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, he married the former Mary Cecilia Murphy, who survives.
Jim, as he was known, had grown up in Sharon Center and had graduated from the Oswayo Valley Central School, class of 1947. After graduation he was employed by Winifred Lanphere, drilling water wells in the area. He had been a Boy Scout Troop leader in Shinglehouse, Pa. Moving to Friendship in 1977, he worked for Nick Bucci in Friendship Dairies for several years. Jim then began his business as a self-employed carpenter, plumber and electrician; a business he ran up to the present time.
He enjoyed baseball and bowling, but most of all he loved being with Cecilia and his friends.
He was a member of Our Lady of Angels Church in Cuba and a former member of Sacred Heart Church in Friendship. He had been a Eucharistic minister of Sacred Heart Church in Friendship. He was a past member and vice president of Alle-Catt Baseball League.
Surviving besides his wife Cecilia are two sisters, Mildred Boats of Olean and Elnadean (Howard) Murray of Lecanto, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Lyle Newton and William Newton; and two sisters, Irene Loucks and Ethelene Vandernick.
Friends may call at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Friendship from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held Tuesday (April 14, 2009) beginning with prayers at the funeral home at 12:15 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Angels Church in Cuba at 1 p.m. The Rev. Jerome Dissek, pastor, will be celebrant, assisted Bv Deacon Frank Pasquale. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wellsville. A 3:30 p.m. prayer service will be held in the funeral home on Monday.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
